Khaled is a young boy thats very interested in adult business. At first he seems to want to stay a child forever with Hassan, but later it says that he wants to grow up, he wants to matter. His dad not giving him the privilege to have grown-up time, which is pretty much saying hes not a man yet. Khaled wont give up. He's so interested he will sit and listen for hours to their conversation waiting for the day he can join them.
